Michelle Blackwell

Michelle Blackwell is a diagnostics leader with more than two decades of experience across commercial industry, hospital pathology and executive healthcare operations. As Chief Product Innovation Officer at BCAL Diagnostics, she leads the company’s product strategy and innovation agenda. Her focus is on bringing clinically meaningful diagnostics to market with discipline, rigour and pace.

Michelle trained in Biomedical Science, and her scientific foundation is in cytology and molecular pathology. She spent close to twenty years in diverse, high-contribution commercial diagnostic roles, both at Hologic Inc and also in the early-stage start-up sector, and she gained innovative working knowledge of the full product lifecycle, from laboratory validation and clinical adoption to market growth, gauging measurable improvements in patient outcomes and healthcare operational workflows.

She later joined St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney as Pathology Operations Manager and then served as Interim Chief Operating Officer. There she was responsible for operational performance across a major tertiary hospital in a major Australian city. This experience gave her a clear view of how diagnostics are used in everyday practice and how high-quality diagnostics delivered when timing is critical, have positive impacts on clinicians and patients alike, can reduce friction in clinical and operational workflows, and can give the gift of time where it matters most.

Michelle is known for being team focussed, caring, disciplined, deliberate and results oriented. She brings together scientific credibility, commercial judgement and operational execution. She cares most about human-centric care and delivering diagnostics that improve patient outcomes within clinically relevant timeframes.
